Qi2 25W Fast Wireless Charging Is Coming to iPhones and Android – But With a Catch

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has officially launched the next major evolution in wireless charging: Qi2 25W. This marks a significant upgrade from the previous 15W limit and brings both iPhones and select Android smartphones into the next generation of magnetic wireless charging.

🚀 What Is Qi2 25W?

Qi2 25W is the newly certified version of wireless charging formerly referred to as Qi2.2. It increases wireless charging speeds by almost 70% compared to the first iteration of Qi2, now offering up to 25 watts of power. Accessory brands like Anker, Baseus, and Ugreen are already among the first to receive early certification, with several power banks and chargers already announced.

Notably, Aukey’s MagFusion 2X was among the first Qi2 25W chargers revealed to the public.

🤖 Android Support: Full Qi2 or Just “Qi2 Ready”?

Here’s where things get a little unclear for Android users. The WPC says that “major Android smartphones” will be adopting Qi2, but didn’t confirm whether that means full Qi2 or just Qi2 Ready.

🔍 What’s the difference?

  • Qi2 Ready devices (like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 & Z Flip 7) support 15W Qi2, but lack the magnetic ring, which limits full performance unless you buy a compatible magnetic case.
  • Full Qi2 devices have the magnet built in, unlocking full 25W speeds with any Qi2 charger.

To date, only one Android phone – the HMD Skyline – fully supports Qi2 with magnetic alignment out of the box. We’re still waiting on the WPC to confirm if upcoming Android flagships will ship with native full Qi2, or continue relying on optional accessories.

📈 Why It Matter

The jump to 25W wireless charging is more than just a number. According to Fady Mishriki, Chair of the WPC Board:

“Consumers will be delighted when they experience Qi2 25W. The number of devices in the Qi2 certification queue is unprecedented.”

For users, this means:

  • Faster charging without cables
  • Broader accessory compatibility
  • More innovation in magnetic accessories and power banks

💭 Final Thought

Qi2 25W has the potential to standardize high-speed wireless charging across platforms, but there’s still fragmentation — especially on the Android side. If you’re in the market for a wireless charger, look for models explicitly marked “Qi2 25W Certified” to future-proof your setup.

Stay tuned as more smartphones join the Qi2 ecosystem later this year — and hopefully, with full support.
